The foundation’s team of doulas and cultural translators provide accessible and culturally appropriate care to our birthing families. The doula is to ensure the birthing person feels safe, empowered, informed, respected, and heard.

Doula Care

Words of wisdom from our doula team to our patients…

How does a doula help in labour?

A Doula gives support and information so the person giving birth can feel strong and trust the process. She is on call 24/7 until you give birth and not only supports you but also the partner and other family members - she is not there to replace them. She will work with your partner or support person so they can feel confident and hands-on.

What do you wish pregnant families knew about doulas?

  • They are not just helpful for home birth - a majority of the time we assist in hospital births. The comradery between us and the South Team and providers at the hospital - we all work together as a team and it is so wonderful when our clients see us as this.

  • We provide continuous support - sometimes we are the only person you know the entire time at the hospital.

  • If you want an epidural it is okay with us! We are still really helpful even if you choose this option during your delivery.

  • We are not there to make judgments or decisions for our clients or to give medical advice but we are there to make sure you know your options and have the information you need to make informed decisions and consent.

  • Your doula is the face you see the most during your birth process (aside from your partner/support person)

  • We doula’s do this work from the heart. We love what we do!

Favourite memories from our doulas:

“I have been working with a family for their third baby which makes me very proud!”

“Every birth is different and watching someone be born NEVER gets old! Pure Magic!”

“When a repeat client has a fabulous birth!”

“When a new mother says she’d love to go for baby #2. It made me feel great about her experience with her birth!”

For all families in the care of South Community Birth Program, we rely on generous donations to the Vancouver Community Birth Foundation and grants to help keep doula support accessible/barrier-free for all families seeking one - especially for those likely to be most vulnerable during the birthing process.

Words from doula recipients…

“I couldn’t have got through the experience smoothly without my doula. Even though I was anxious, nervous and scared about giving birth. My doula’s expertise and motherly support as doula assured me that everything would be ok. I would highly recommend. Thank you again”

The bulk of our donation need is to fund our doula program as it is the most widely used Foundation service. Every year we see a rise in need for support.
